Like a long lost traveler…

…I’m back again.

The thing is, I didn’t really “go” anywhere. I just didn’t have anything to say here. Now I find myself with things I’d like to share. Have you ever had that urge? It’s not exactly that there’s no one to talk to. But if I told one friend, I’d want to tell several. And while certain friends seem like the right audience for certain news, others may not be interested or be available to listen to my ramblings on certain topics.

Isn’t it lovely that now there are blogs? You can come and read as you please. I can come and write as I please. And we’re both happy.

The preacher’s job is my job, too

Our pastor mentioned today a book he was writing on preaching. During the course of his research, he has been surprised to discover that the great preachers of the ages agree on the ultimate job of the preacher. I imagine many today would enter long debate regarding the answer to that question. What is a preacher’s job?

To teach the scriptures? To explain how to live the Christian life? To counsel the people? To lead? To inspire? To deliver messages from the Lord? To pray?

Well, perhaps a little of all that comes into play, but none of it became the singular focus of the great preachers –nor of my pastor himself. His conclusion:

The preacher’s job is to bring people into the presence of God.

This morning, as he said it, I realized that’s my job, too. I could see it in my mind’s eye: through the course of a story, I bring people into moments where the Holy Spirit can speak to their hearts. Again and again, here and there, with different moments for different readers or watchers or hearers, the voice of God will speak. The heart of God will touch theirs. The call of God will echo in their ears.

Come to Me, you who are weary and heavy-laden.

Come to Me, you who are thirsty.

Come to Me, you who long for love and meaning.

Come to Me, you broken-hearted, you desperate, you sick and dying.

And I shall give you rest. And healing. And wholeness. And I’ll pour out My love upon you, filling you until every human sense you have is tingling, ringing, pulsing, savoring the manifestations of it. Until you laugh and sing and dance with the overflow of it.

Let the glory of the Lord fill the earth! Let His love call ring out through the atmosphere. Let His beauty shine through in every line of my art, every word of my stories, through the faces of the actors and actresses that play the parts, and through the unsaid words that will speak to hearts in silent plea: Come to Me.

Yeah, I wanna be a part of that!

Heavenly perfume

What do lilacs smell like, anyway?

This morning at church, the Lord led our pastor to pray for those who need a healing touch. One lady he approached said that her heart hurt. He assured her that Jesus loved to bind up the broken-hearted. He began to pray and stopped. “Are you wearing perfume?”

What a strange question to ask a woman who needs prayer!

She shook her head in the negative. He took a deep breath and smiled. “I smell lilacs all over you.” He turned to the women in the nearby pew. “Do you smell that?” A couple of them nodded.

Back to the woman he was praying for. “Do you smell that?” She nodded. Even just looking at the back of her head, I knew she was touched. Pastor chuckled and told her, “The Lord is doing something special for you.”

I’ve heard of manifestations of the Holy Spirit where you could smell something lovely in the atmosphere. It has been prophesied over Ted and I that such a heavenly scent, like the Rose of Sharon, would come during times of our ministry. It was somehow very special to me to witness this manifestation in my own presence for the first time, even if I wasn’t close enough to smell it myself.

Someday!

P.S. It still tickles me that my God is so multi-faceted. So layered with humor and affection. So attentive to details. He delights us and warns us with visions, comforts us with warmth, shakes us out of our traditions, and even fills the nostrils of His people with the rich fragrance of His love. How great is our God!
